Tuesday, April 10, 2007Leech Jar and SpoonThis is a very pretty-looking leech jar I found on eBay. Lately there seems to be a lot of these goblet-esque leech jars listed, but none of them have really caught my fancy. One very pretty one was even cobalt blue in colour! The seller on eBay describes this leech "jar" as: Coming from an old collector in Nîmes, South of France, this is a stunning, large, leech jar, made from blown glass, with bubles inside, pretty baluster stem, and its very rare boxwood two sized spoon, adjustable on a long srewing handle finely turned... Sorry, we will refuse to sell the rare spoons separately.... Such rare leech set is described and pictured (see our last photo) in the fine French book, Doctor Gaboriau, "outils de la Santé et Médecine d'Autrefois", p.165.... it was used in apothecaries to deliver leech on demand. Dimensions: Glass jar: 12ins x 9ins (30cm x 23cm). Wooden spoon: 13-1/4ins x 1-3/4ins = 34cm x 4,5cm. Condition: Is excellent, some light cracks in wood, some light wear and stripes on glass, nothing serious, as you can see on our detailed pictures. This is a French medical deal, dating from late 18th Century or early 1800s. Labels: antiques, bizarre, glassware, leech jars
